♔ Summary

Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door.

♔ Review

I'm glad I got to have had the opportunity to read this! Now it sits on my "favorites" shelf.

The author, Stephanie Perkins, is the same as with Anna and the French Kiss, which I reviewed in the past and LOVED. But there's always the dubt... will this second book from the author be as brilliant as the first one? Now I can definitely say that you don't have to worry, because Lola and the Boy Next Door didn't disappoint me at all. As I said, now it's one of my favorite books.

The story revolves around the main character, Lola (from Dolores), a seventeen year old girl who is very open and original and unique. She takes the way she dresses as a tool to express herself to the world, which I really liked. Her parents are a homosexual couple, and I enjoyed reading about them and about all the relationships within the family. They were an instant like!

Lola has a boyfriend who is twenty two years old. They age gap makes the situation a little bit hard the situation and her parents' acceptance (he is the singer from a band of rock... you see where this is going), although she is thinks everything will right itself in the future. But then her neighbors move back to the house next door, and with them, they bring memories that Lola would have preferred to remain untouched. The neighbors are a pair of twins, Calliope and Cricket (Cricket! You see how cute that name is?). Oh, Cricket. If I had to do a list of the best boyfriends of 2011, he would be on that list. Cricket has always been like Calliope's shadow, the great skater. Although he has his own gift; he loves constructing mechanisms and other things that are incredible. He has a very charming personality. Sometimes he's a bit reserved, but in the end he has a big heart and cares about his dear ones. He sometimes had that awkward air that made him all the more adorable.

I can't even begin describing with words how wonderful and beautiful their relationship is! It's one of those that makes you reread their scenes just because you need a Cricket on your life. Incredibly adorable! At first there were some obstacles like Lola's boyfriend, and in the end you realize that maybe they weren't a perfect couple like she thought (I was totally team Cricket).

Great review! What is the Spanish word for Cricket? I loved Lola's parents. They were unique and very loveable. Is Delores a common name for young people in Spain? I am guessing not. In the US, it's a name for old ladies.

Hahaha the Spanish word for "cricket" is "grillo". Nope, in Spain it's also a name that used to be popular in the past but not in the present.
